We started the day by walking up to the church of Notre Dame de la Serra starting directly from the apartment. After an initial bit of faffing owing to rubbish directions it took us about forty minutes. The church is lovely, very simple with an elegant bell-tower and a big statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a rock. It is perched right on top of a hill and can be seen for miles.
The next stage was to climb the Capo di a Veta. After about an hour of easy path from the church, we had quite a scramble up the main North-West ridge towards the summit. The path was unclear for the first 10 minutes or so, making us climb with hands as well as feet for a while. We reached the top after a very steep final ascent lasting at least half an hour. On reaching the top (703m) we found a large stanchioned cross with visitors' book attached. We wrote in the book and had lunch there.
The descent was steep and long, but we enjoyed the head-high maquis and had gorgeous views across the Golfe de Calvi and of the Citadelle which seemed to be constantly in sunshine.
To finish the day off we walked down to the water front on our return to Calvi and Helen paddled. The mountains were beautiful with their tops showing above the cloud in a pink sunset.
We had dinner at Le Nautic on the sea front. Jeremy had lamb and Helen a pizza and they were both excellent.
