Norfolk Holiday, Summer 2019

Saturday 27th July

From a standing start, we were packed and ready to leave by 12.30. The traffic was light and we arrived (in light drizzle) mid afternoon. Laura was asleep; Jeremy took Matthew in the garden for some cricket while Helen unpacked. Then when Laura woke up the children watched a film until teatime.

Sunday 28th July

The first proper day of holiday dawned grey and slightly damp. We packed a picnic and drove to Overstrand. We played cricket in the nets for an hour or so, then drove on to Morston Quay where we had booked a sailing lesson for all four of us. We had the same teacher – Sophie – who had taught Jeremy and Matthew last year. Everyone had a great time. Afterwards we had an icecream at the National Trust centre, and picked up a second hand book for bedtime.

Monday 29th July

Today had been designated (by the children) a "non-tech" day, so when they got up they played and read really nicely until we joined them. It was also our first sight of proper sunshine!

We drove straight to Overstrand, and walked down to the beach. First the children went looking for mussels (and found them). Then we ate our picnic lunch. A large extended family set up a cricket match in front of us, and after a while Matthew asked if he could join the fielding. In due course he got a bat and a bowl too – even Laura got a bat in the end, just before they broke for lunch. After pudding Jeremy took the children up to the shop to buy buckets and spades; once there, he was persuaded instead to buy two bodyboards and they spent the rest of the afternoon learning to bodysurf as the tide came in. When we ran out of beach we walked back up to the cricket ground and played in the nets for a while. We came home for tea – tomato chicken eaten outside in the garden in the last of the sun.
